Last night on the Grammy Awards red carpet, a recurring trend stuck out: red on red. A number of artists wore a red lip with a long solid red dress and it got me thinking. Rihanna, Skylar Grey, Simone Johnson, Natasha Beddingfield, and Kaya Jones all sported this trend. Can red on red carry over to every day or is it only for glamorous nights?
Most of my daily makeup doesn’t stray far from the “accepted norm” of coloring pairing, but I also don’t believe in having rules to various art forms. So I explored the possibilities of wearing a red lip with a red top.
The easiest way to pull off the look is to pair a semi-sheer red gloss with fairly neutral makeup and a contrasting color of jewelry. Here I chose theBalm Auto Balm gloss in Snappy and wore it with theBalm Hot Mama blush and Laura Mercier Cafe au Lait eyeshadow.
Next I went with a bolder look and a whimsical red top. To complement the floral pattern in my top I added more Hot Mama blush, lined my lips with a neutral liner and used my finger to top it with Too Faced La Creme Lip Cream in Stiletto Red. I added Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Zero at my upper lashline, a second coat of mascara, and NARS Bengali to my crease. To balance the fuller lip color I also added brow gel to my already filled in brows.
And finally, I couldn’t pair red with red without mimicking some of the more glamorous trends. To get red carpet ready, I smudged out my eyeliner, contoured with a mildly shimmery bronzer, added a gray shadow to my lid and a shimmery highlight to the inner corner or my eye. I lined my lower lashline with NARS Galapagos, added another layer of mascara and chose Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in Really Red for an opaque lip to match my dress.
There are numerous ways to wear a red lip, but to pair it with a red top, here are my tips:
- The bolder the lip, the bolder the brow!
- Use a shimmering warm pink blush to keep casual looks playful.
- Wear hair styled down.
- Opt for a gray eyeshadow on lids for nights out.
Do you ever match your lip color to your outfit? What are some of your favorite pairings?
