I’ve long been looking for a new “it” mascara. Something non-waterproof, preferably water-resistant, black, curling, volumizing, and cruelty-free. I was about to give up hope until deciding to try NARS Larger Than Life mascaras. As much as I hear about the rest of the NARS line, I never hear about the mascaras.
Originally I was looking at the volumizing version. But after learning that the lengthening formula holds a curl well, I was beyond intrigued. And despite the rubberized bristles (so not a fan of most) I decided to take the plunge.
The first thing I love about this mascara is the packaging. Obviously it is iconic NARS, but I feel like mascaras are the product where companies throw caution to the wind and come up with some of the flashiest and most bizarre packaging and names (ahem…that’s you, Too Faced) which often deter me from even trying a new formula. Bravo to NARS for keeping the name Larger Than Life far less risqué than many of their blushes.
Next on the list of differences is the handle. I quite prefer the added length as it gives far more control during application.
One moderate coat of mascara holds my previously added curl beautifully and gives a slightly elongated, very natural look. My barely-there bottom lashes suddenly become more prominent which draws major attention to the eyes.
A second coat gives me the more dramatic look I prefer and makes my eyes look much bigger. I do feel like there is enough volume added to my lashes and am happy with the finished result.
A surprising bonus to the Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara is that it is quite water-resistant. I ran three miles, splashed my face, then showered (rinsing but not using soap on my face) and the mascara stayed put. It didn’t smear, flake, or transfer. And my curl stays in place for a full day.
This is it. This is my new favorite mascara. I still need to try the volumizing version though. All in the name of research ;)
Summary: NARS Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara offers buildable length and slight volume with some serious water-resistant and curl-holding power. While only coming in one color (black), using a sparse amount for one coat still provides a very natural look. The rubberized bristles can cause clumping, so I suggest using a blinnk-through-the-wand application rather than a zig-zag motion as well as applying additional coats before the first is completely dry.
