Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Fresco and Nocturnal Review and Swatches

If I was to narrow down Hourglass cosmetics to one word, it would be luxury.  From the sleek and sophisticated minimalistic packaging to the refined textures and classic shades, Hourglass offers a line that makes makeup junkies swoon and wallets tremble.

Ambient Lighting powders sent the beauty world into a frenzy last year.  The Ambient Lighting Palette (review) quickly sold out, and now there are Ambient Lighting Blushes to be had.  I’ve got my eye on one or two, but at this price point I really want to see them in person first.  If I can hold out, that is.

When it comes to the world of powders, Hourglass obviously knows what they are doing.  But you know what I rarely hear about?  Their lipsticks.  The Femme Rouge Velvet Crèmes, to be exact.

Fresco / Nocturnal

My first Femme Rouge Velvet Crème was Nocturnal.  A semi-deep reddened plum that offers a soft and totally wearable winter pout.  Sooooo pretty! It is a fantastic first step for anyone wanting to broaden their collection into something with more impact but isn’t ready to dive into the vampy lip.

Shortly after, I entered my rosy natural phase (of which I am still running back to regularly) and purchased Fresco.  I wanted an every day shade that was complete sophistication, but still flirty enough to wear on a date.

The formula for both of these is exactly the same.  Rich, creamy, opaque, smooth…like velvet.  This is definitely a heavier formula that doesn’t offer much slip, but rather wears for a few hours making my lips feel indulgent and lavish.

Hourglass is a brand I reserve for special makeup treats, but the Velvet Crémes are worth considering for any staple lip shade.

Price: $30.00 each / $24.00 each for a refill cartridge

Availability: Hourlgass, Sephora

Summary: Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Créme Lipsticks are rich, creamy, and an easy luxury favorite.  They last a few hours between application probably due in large part to the thicker formula.  There is a mild classic lipstick scent that lingers, but is not bothersome.  The shade range hits all the classics leaning heavily toward neutrals and with nothing ostentatious.  Refill cartridges may be purchased rather than replacing the entire package.

Disclosure: This product was purchased with my own money.

I have Fresco and your post has inspired me to break it out again! We have been snowed in (!!!) since Tuesday afternoon here in the good ol’ ATL, so I haven’t been wearing makeup at all. My mom and i are going to go out for dinner tonight and maybe I’ll sport Fresco – and ya know, foundation and blush, lol!

This richer formula is fantastic for such cold weather. Like wearing layers on my lips!

GORGEOUS on you! Both of them! I like their lipsticks too. You need Muse!
