Get the Look: Back to School

For my daughter’s very first day of school, I thought it would be fun to post my makeup.  Little V is my oldest so this is the start of being on a real world schedule.  The look I created works for a multitude of back to school scenarios… student on a budget, busy mom, or someone first starting out with makeup.  I don’t know if I’m more happy about the cost or the simplicity!

When I started beauty blogging (over 2 1/2 years ago!), I was on a drugstore beauty budget.  Over time, my budget increased, my tastes refined, I started leaning more toward cruelty-free products, and my family moved (twice).  Our current town is very culturally diverse, which I love.  But this makes shopping at drugstores difficult.  Rather than Wet N Wild, the stores carry Black Radiance.  Rather than stocking Sonia Kashuk, there is a large selection of Cover Girl Queen and Iman.  I think it’s fantastic because it’s difficult for one brand to create products that will work from the fairest of the fair to the deepest of the deep.  But when there is an abundance of brands suited toward one end of the shade range spectrum, finding workable products gets rather tricky.

Imagine my surprise when a chance encounter with Walgreens led me to a fully stocked Milani display.  And a fully stocked Wet N Wild display.  I hauled.  Big time.  And I’m super excited to own a few treasures that will make appearances in upcoming posts.

Despite my best efforts, I am not a very punctual person.  So for my makeup I needed to save as much time as possible.  I started with Sonia Kashuk Tinted Moisturizer which gives radiance, a sheer base, moisture, and SPF in one product.  NYX Concealer in a Jar added coverage under my eyes and anywhere else that the tinted moisturizer wasn’t enough.

A time-saving trick…  Skip bronzer (gasp!).  Skip highlighter.  Instead, place a blush like e.l.f. Mellow Mauve slightly lower and further back on the cheeks.  Dust any leftovers at the sides of the forehead, down the nose and on the chin.  The color looks natural, the placement acts almost like a bronzer, and leaving the tops of the cheekbones bare lets the tinted moisturizer glow.

Eyebrows are a must for me and I chose to use the Milani Brow Fix Kit. The ultra-smooth and pigmented Wet N Wild Silent Treatment Trio supplied all three of my eyeshadow colors and Milani Total Lash Cover added volume and length to my eyelashes.  A swipe of NYX Butter Gloss in Strawberry Parfait, a quick powder under my eyes and down my T-Zone to set and I was good to go!

But you know me…  once I was done smothering my baby girl in kisses, it was time to swap the gloss for bold lipstick.  I’m loving Milani Color Statement Lipsticks.  This one is Rose Amour.

Crazy quick.  Unbelievably simple.  After pinning back second-day curls, I was ready for the first day of school.  What is your back to school makeup routine?  Do you struggle to find fully stocked makeup displays at your local drugstore?

I am constantly struggling to find stocked makeup displays at my drugstores. Thankfully, I work at a Walgreens and tell the cosmetics girl to keep me in the loop on new displays! ;) She’ll always drop by the pharmacy to tell me what’s coming…is that cheating? LOL

Hahaha, the perks of pharmaceuticals :D

Your hair is so pretty curly! (And straight too!) I’m going to need to use my Silent Treatment palette again after seeing this post. I love the eye look you created. And those NYX Butter Glosses? LOVE THEM.

Thanks, Tiffany! I think I’ll like the curls more as my hair gets longer :) I’ve been reading that Wet N Wild makes a great eyeshadow, but I’m still surprised at the quality. I tried the regular NYX glosses and returned them. The smell….yikes! I’ve been struggling not to buy more butter glosses though! But now of course I want Bite lip creams so it’s time to focus on those :)

I only have one of their mega glosses or whatever they’re called and yeah, they smell like cough syrup. Ick! But I really love that formula too. And you definitely need to look into trying the Bite lip creams! I already know I’m going to be adding more to my collection eventually. The formula is heavenly.
