Fashionable Fridays: Going Violet for Spring

In my attempt to cover all the makeup bases, I’ve been really pushing myself to incorporate more color into wearable looks.  As I’ve already covered orange lips, I thought I’d work my way to another shade I haven’t yet mastered:  violet.

I blame much of my hesitation to wear lip colors in the purple family on the warmth and depth of my skin.  I’m simply not going to wear an opaque lavender a la Nicki Manaj.  And the vampy lip is fun for Fall, but Spring begs for something brighter.

Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Gemma is the perfect blend of pink and violet for my lips this season.  You all know I love the formula, and while the tube and a heavy swatch can be somewhat terrifying, it wears beautifully.  The trick is choosing just the right shades for the rest of the face.

I like keeping my skin simple.  Anything super heavy will look even more like a mask when treading the fine line of unnatural tones and gorgeous color.  It is also important to allow for glow in the skin and shimmer on the lids.  I stuck with neutral tones, definition at the upper lashline, defined brows, and volumizing mascara.

A tip I picked up from the gorgeous Natalie at my local Sephora is to use bronzer to add depth to the face without adding a ton of color.  She tried this on a whim while playing with an OCC Lip Tar Set and said it worked perfectly.  I have to agree!  I went with an almost invisible shimmer across the top or the cheeks, forehead, and down the nose.

A fashionable look this Friday?  I think so!  Be on the look out for more posts in this series.  I’ll try out seasonal trends, runway colors, and artistic application techniques.  Let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see.  I have a couple more posts worked out, but I’m always open to new ideas.

What are some of your favorite violet toned lip colors?  Do you stick to all plums or do you venture into the world of purple and lavender?

Big fan of plum colors! I have neutral to warm skin tone. Love loreal color riche balm in plush plum as an everyday shade.

Oh a balm would be such a great way to make plum work. I like glosses too for making vibrant hues a little more wearable.

Great post, Alison :). I recently purchased the Violetta (89) shade of Sonia Kashuk Satin Luxe Lip Color and did a similar look today with neutral eyeshadow and brown liner (with a little of my usual black underneath). My only other violet lipstick is the cooler L’Oreal Colour Riche Violet Chiffon (175). They’re both nice for the blue overcast days we often have here in Seattle.
My skin tone is similar to yours so I completely agree that the Nicki Minaj pale lavender is a big No :).

I love SK lip colors! Violetta always catches my eye but I still haven’t purchased it.

  • Vanessa

I’ve had my eye on Gemma!!!

And it looks fantastic on you! I love the purple. I’m actually surprised that more people don’t wear purple. I think it looks great.

I’ve recently bought a few purple colors, including Maybelline Vivid Brazen Berry and MAC Strong Woman. I’d say Brazen Berry is rather similar to Gemma, especially if I mixed in a little bit of strong woman.

Still, after I use-up Brazen Berry (and I intend to ! :) ), I think I might keep my eye on Gemma… just so lovely!

Gemma is my third shade from this line. I really feel like it’s a love it or leave it formula. Definitely not typical of a balm.

  • Kiss & Make-up

I know I can’t get away with this shade, but you can, looks good!

    • Alison M

I have a feeling this one would look gorgeous on you and that with your skin tone you’d have more flexibility in pairing it with a variety of other color products :)

I’m often attracted to purple lip colors and wind up having a lot that are not really wearable for me. This looks great on you, though. Don’t you find purples make your teeth look nice and white?

    • Alison M

I think purples work best as red or pink toned purples. Not so much the blue toned ones. Hmmm… I almost never show my teeth so I guess I never thought to look for a whitening effect.

  • BeautyReflections

It’s a perfect violet on you! You look gorgeous!

    • Alison M

Thank you! I swatched Gemma at every opportunity after the Color Balm Lipsticks hit stores. I’m glad I finally worked up the nerve to try it :)

  • Sunny @Mostly Sunny

Whoa Alison, this one looks great on you! I think the most similar one I’ve tried is Estee Lauder Rebellious Violet. I don’t think I look bad with it, but for some reason something like this is not my go-to!

    • Alison M

Thanks, Sunny! I bet violet looks fabulous on you, but you’re right…it’s not a go-to shade :)
